This symbolic image of the "Battlefield Cross" is a 24"x36" print with a custom frame by Studio Framing here in Los Angeles. This image was shot on April 26th, 2015 in Los Angeles, California. The dog tags read: “Remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifices since 1775," which pays tribute to all the men and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifices for our freedom since the birth of our U.S Military. The Kevlar Band on the helmet reads: "Never Forget."
What is the Battlefield Cross?
The Fallen Soldier Battle Cross, Battlefield Cross or Battle Cross is a symbolic replacement of a cross at or near the battlefield or at the base camp for a soldier who has been killed or is missing in action. The practice started during the American Civil War or possibly earlier as a means of identifying the bodies on the battleground before they were removed. Today it is used more as a memorial ceremony among those soldiers still living to show honor and respect for the fallen or missing soldier.
The helmet and dog tags signify the fallen soldier, their name never to be forgotten. The inverted rifle with bayonet signals a time for prayer, a break in the action to pay tribute to a fellow soldier. The combat boots, worn and dirty, represents the final march of the soldier’s last battle. After a set period of time, the memorial is respectfully dismantled, with the components being returned to the unit for appropriate disposition.
